Virtual worlds are often weird and wonderful and allow you to explore alternate universes filled with awe. These virtual worlds can also be filled with doom and gloom and creatures that look like they’ve come from Satan’s ‘do not enter’ dungeon. We don’t judge what you’re into, but we do judge which are the scariest, creepiest and freakiest virtual worlds out there. Here are some of the latest and greatest horror games, with the newest being A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead.

1. Resident Evil Series

Resident Evil is known as Capcom’s greatest creation. Since flooding the video game industry in 1996 with horror and thrill, the franchise has gone on to recreate and revamp the horror gaming scene and set the bar very high.

Players are introduced to a world of death and decay and are set with a fate of killing zombies and ending biological experiments that have gone wrong. The game features creepy camera angles, puzzles and one claustrophobic experience after another.

The latest Resident Evil 2 and 3 have blown horror games out of the murky water with their terrific gameplay and eerie graphics.

2. Silent Hill Series

Known for its ludicrously scary characters, this Konami series is the ultimate psychological horror. Explore a town infested with fog and try to differentiate which part of it is out of a nightmare and which comes from reality. The creatures are creepy and freaky, and the music makes you uneasy.

Artists Masahiro Ito and Akita Yamaska really knew what they were doing when they created the characters and music for this one. Be prepared to meet your subconscious fears with Silent Hill 2, a game well known for its creepy story, unsettling location and plenty of hidden messages.

3. Outlast

A horror game where all you can do is run? Sounds like real-life hell. Red Barrels really knew what they wanted to do to people when they created this game. Outlast will have your toes curling and hands sweating within the first 15 minutes.

Players have to investigate Mount Massive Asylum as journalist Miles Upshur. Your only weapon is a night-vision camcorder, which runs out of batteries at the most inconvenient time.

The game is ‘filmed’ in a first-person perspective, which really leaves you feeling dizzy at the end of each instalment. You feel helpless and are in constant dread while navigating the halls of this haunted asylum. Try their latest instalments if you dare.

4. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Frictional Games developed Amnesia: The Dark Descent by using some serious voodoo magic. This game will scare the living daylights out of you. Players assume the role of Daniel, the poor soul who wakes up in a castle. He has no memory and no sense of direction, and it’s your job to figure things out.

The game is dark and pushes you to the brink of insanity with hallucinations and never-ending darkness. As another game with no form of weapon, you have to rely on your senses to escape the dread and the horrors, which have one mission: to eliminate you.

5. A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead

The latest and possibly greatest installation in the series of games you definitely shouldn’t play with your partner is A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead. This game has promised sheer horror and terror with an immersive experience that will shake you to the core.

Set in post-apocalyptic America, the world is infested with aliens that hunt using sound and sonar. Navigate your way through the world quietly in order to survive. The intense silence, paired with sudden bursts of sound, makes for a game filled with jump scares and panic.

Will this contemporary horror game take the cake for the most terrifying horror game out there?

The horror game industry is flooded with plenty of creepy and crawly games, but these are at the top of the class. Whether you’re after psychological horror that will have you questioning your existence or sheer panic and terror that has you holding your breath, there’s something for you in this twisted world.

Experiment and explore the world of horror, and why not start by trying A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead? Rather you than me!
